PARK HYATT

99 HALSEY STREET, AUCKLAND CBD 1010. NEW ZEALAND

Park Hyatt Auckland is a high-end hotel in the heart of New Zealand’s Capital developed by Fu Wah and documented by ar+d architects from Singapore.   The WSP Specialist Lighting team (including myself) were tasked with developing the front of house lighting design as well as the external façade.  It was a challenging project due to its size and there were many areas that needed to be developed and illuminated to create a perfect welcoming feeling for hotel patrons.

EXTERNAL FACADE

The team was approached by ar+d to help create their external façade to glow like a flickering candle.  To achieve this, we firstly looked at the external façade material and different colour temperatures of light to see what would best suit the design intent.

SCREEN RENDERS

We then visually communicated these ideas with renders to see what colour best suited the interior and architectural team. As per  the images below:

SCREEN DETAIL

Together we worked on a solution for mounting the light fitting on the façade, here are typical details to conceal the lighting within the form of the building. This was hand-drawn and rendered in photoshop to clearly express the intent of the light fitting.

FACADE PERSPECTIVE

We wanted the building to look illuminated, welcoming and mesmerizing from the shoreline, I completed the render as seen below to compliment the architect's vision.

INTERIOR SPACES

CAPTAINS BAR

The captain's bar has a complicated ceiling, we wanted the lighting to complement design by ensuring the lighting wasn’t bold and clunky within the space. Therefore we used small concealed downlights with a black matt finish to look seamless with the timber finish.

BOAT HOUSE

The Boat house is a multifunctional space; due to the venue the lighting needs to take consideration for different events. The lighting is strategically placed for this purpose as seen in the lightmap below.

TYPICAL ROOM

THE CHAIRMAN'S SUITE

We wanted the lighting to create a comfortable and cozy feeling. This was achieved by detailing LED strip light concealed within the internal ceilings, walls and joinery. Lighting calculations were completed to ensure enough light is in the space for general lighting.
